The Lindamood-Bell Reading Program
The Lindamood-Bell program was a 15 week program developed in America for adults with minimal literary skills.
In a world where most children have developed a level of phonemic awareness which is sufficient to allow them to take advantage of conventional reading instruction by the time they enter school, some have not.
Without appropriate intervention, these children tend to fall further and further behind, not only in reading and spelling, but also across the curriculum with all the secondary consequences to themselves and to society that this implies.
One form of intervention which has had considerable success has been the Lindamood-Bell approach, which addresses the major skills necessary for the development of fluent and competent reading. In the hands of trained professionals the program has proven to be a powerful remediation tool, especially for students who have had little success with conventional instruction.
In 1995/96, the Khuti Foundation subsidised two of our teachers to learn the Lindamood-Bell method and become accredited Teachers. The program ran for some years, with several clients achieving reading improvement rates of between four and eleven years, which is a very significant increase for adults.
The program eventually ceased due to the teachers' workload and family commitments.
